I am honoured to share some thoughts on the significance of the Sabah International Expo 2010 (SIE2010), Sabah's Premier Trade Fair to be held on 14-18th October, 2010 and SIBC2010 on 15th October, 2010 at 1Borneo Hypermall, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The Sabah State Government recognises the ever-important role and contribution of the SIE2010, as proven by the last five successfully-organised SIEs. Through the SIE, there has been an increase in regional and bilateral trade and improved promotion of trade and investment opportunities. It has also put Sabah on the map as a MICE centre, and in addition, it serves as a platform for networking and establishing contact among local and international business people.
I am happy to note that SIE is taking the initiative to promote "Green" business at a conference during the expo. The pertinent issue of climate change is in fact the responsibility of every nation. I was informed that there will be discussions on issues related to government policies and incentive packages, and smart-partnership of private and public sectors to support and encourage green technologies. It is timely that SIE has taken a step in creating an appropriate platform for prominent speakers to meet with key policy-makers and business communities in the region to discuss the implementation of green technologies.
There is still a lot of potential for business in Sabah, a state endowed with abundant natural resources. Coupled with social and political stability, Sabah provides a conducive environment not for only business, but also travel and living.
Of late, economic activities have seen rapid growth due to initiatives under the Sabah Development Corridor. The government, through the implementer of the SDC, the Sabah Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA), will focus on two key strategies. The first is to develop logistics and the second is to address labour needs. Both are crucial factors in turning Sabah into a state that is more attractive for trade and investment.
I am confident that Sabah is poised for hub status for the Far East region. This is reflected in SIE2010's theme "Sabah - Hub For The Far East" which is relevant to steps we have and are taking. I also urge local and foreign businesses, regardless of size, to tap into opportunities and potentials by participating in SIE2010 and SIBC2010.
